The children were excited to see us arrive and were happy to pose for a picture or two! |
On Tuesday morning we were up early and back to Kawempe. Traffic was heavy and we arrived later than planned but time is relative in Uganda. We met our Ugandan team and continued registering individual households in the region. Kawempe is a large area, built on a hill. I noticed that the simplest homes were located at the bottom of the hill and as we moved up they gradually got larger and a bit nicer. Even those however, are small with only a few rooms and little if any decor. Most furnishings are used and well worn. Some apartments have a small courtyard which is shared and this is where cooking, laundry and childcare takes place. Many volunteers brought small gifts which were distributed discretely to young children. It wasn't long before we were followed by large clusters of children hoping to receive similar gifts. Debra, our founder, brought hundreds of samples of perfume samples which were donated by The Bay and Sears. These were thankfully received by local women and were a fragrant addition to their Valentine's Day!!! In the next few photos you will see evidence of daily life in a busy village.
